Sometimes a countdown timer is exactly what you need in your class. Today for an English activity my class are working in groups. Every ten minutes I need to give out different instructions. Here is the perfect tool for doing that – on online countdown timer. There are lots of different styles to choose from with my favourite being the BOMB!!! As a side I have even used it at home to get my kids to eat their meals. They love it.

Great advice! I use a kitchen timer to keep myself on track, but I never thought about using it for a class (though I’ll be sharing this with my teacher friends). I sometimes use multiple timers simultaneously and I can see how that might be helpful in a classroom setting, as well. Sometimes I’ll time myself on an individual task with one timer and time how long I’ve been working with another timer using http://www.kitchentimer.org and I can see how doing so in a classroom could be helpful in moving a lesson plan along (i.e. timing an hour long lesson about fractions and simultaneously timing how long it takes to go over the “adding fractions” section). Thoughts?
Great ideas. I use it more as a timer for specific tasks within the class. Sometimes, but not often if we do a little silent reading I will put the timer up. More often though it is for specific tasks. Giving the students 15 minutes to complete a group task or their 5 minute basic facts at the beginning of a maths lesson.
